The Kerala Story Movie Review

‘The Kerala Story’ is an audacious film that fearlessly explores a sensitive and contentious subject matter, much like its predecessor, ‘The Kashmir Files.’ It revolves around the lives of four nursing college students in Kasargod, Kerala – Shalini Unnikrishnan (Adah Sharma), Nimah (Yogita Bihani), Siddhi Idnani (Geetanjali), and the enigmatic Asifa (Sonia Balani).

The movie delves into the dark world of Love Jihad, as Asifa, an ISIS aide, secretly conspires to indoctrinate and convert non-Muslim girls to Islam. She manipulates events to ensnare Shalini and Geetanjali, setting off a chain of events that leads to Shalini’s pregnancy with Rameez, a man who insists on her conversion to marry him but later abandons her.

The plot thickens as Ishaq enters the picture and marries the vulnerable Shalini, now renamed Fathima, with sinister intentions of taking her to Syria as a sex slave. As the three girls face harrowing ordeals at the hands of Muslim Jihadists, the movie unflinchingly showcases the plight of thousands of alleged victims.

Adah Sharma’s remarkable performance as Shalini Unnikrishnan deserves accolades, as she effectively portrays the innocent Keralite girl with authenticity and dedication to her character’s diction. Siddhi as Geetanjali and Sonia as Asifa deliver standout performances, skillfully navigating the complexities of their dual-shaded characters. Yogita Bihani shines in her role during the movie’s climax, leaving a lasting impact on the audience.

The technical aspects of the film are top-notch, with convincing locations and cinematography that effectively immerse the audience in the storyline. The crisp editing and back-and-forth narration maintain the film’s intensity, keeping the viewers engaged throughout. The music and lyrics are exceptional, providing a fitting backdrop to the emotional rollercoaster that unfolds on screen.

‘The Kerala Story’ is unapologetic in its portrayal of the contentious theme of ‘Love Jihad,’ addressing the alleged plight of non-Muslim Indian girls from Kerala who were supposedly victims of brainwashing and violence in ISIS camps. The inclusion of real-life testimonials lends an air of authenticity to the narrative, leaving the audience moved and contemplative.

However, the film is not without its shortcomings. The excessive violence and rape scenes make it unsuitable for a wider audience, limiting its reach and appeal. Additionally, certain biased dialogues may polarize viewers, as evident by the audience’s mixed reactions in theaters.

The film does attempt to tread a careful line, steering clear of portraying Islam in a negative light. It includes moments that express respect for the religion, but it misses an opportunity to delve deeper into the true essence of Islam, unlike other films that have explored similar themes.

In conclusion, ‘The Kerala Story’ is a bold and unflinching cinematic endeavor that fearlessly addresses a controversial subject matter. Adah Sharma’s award-worthy performance, along with strong technical aspects, contributes to a realistic and immersive experience for the audience. However, its explicit content and polarizing dialogues may restrict its appeal to a particular demographic. If you have an appetite for thought-provoking cinema and can handle the intensity of the subject matter, ‘The Kerala Story’ is worth a watch for its unapologetic storytelling and compelling performances.
